Funnels are one of the latest features Thinkific has launched.
Thinkific has three funnel templates designed to help you gather leads and generate sales.
You customize the pages in the funnel, but you cannot change the order or steps.
Key Takeaways:
- Thinkific Funnels are available on all plans
- There are lead magnet funnels to giveaway a lesson or a download
- A two-step sale page funnel can direct leads to your checkout
Does Thinkific Have Funnels?
Yes, Thinkific offers funnels with all of its plans.
Currently, Thinkific’s funnel features are limited, and we don’t think they will yet replace funnel-building tools like ClickFunnels and Kartra.
It is currently a beta feature, so we expect it to evolve and change over time. We will keep this article updated with all the newest feature releases.
Pros and Cons of Thinkific Funnels
Pros of Thinkific Funnels
- Beginner Friendly – Thinkific Funnels are super easy to use. You are guided through the setup process, and navigating the funnel flow editor and settings is easy.
- Pre-Built Templates – It’s quick to create funnels as Thinkific provides three pre-built templates.
- All Users – You can create funnels on all of Thinkific’s plans. There is no additional fee for using them.
- Built In – As funnels are built into Thinkific, they are connected with all your products, so you don’t need to manage multiple platforms.
- AI Technology – Use the prompts Thinkific provides during setup, and the AI technology will build your pages with compelling copy.
- Pre-Built Funnel – You can only use the pre-built funnel templates and cannot alter the steps.
- Analytics – There is also no funnel analytics available, so it’s difficult to know how your funnels are converting and which changes to make.
- Discount Offer – If you want to add an upsell offer, you have to offer a discount.
- Can’t Edit Email – The recapture email cannot be edited or customized.
- A/B – You can’t test different steps in the funnel with split tests.
- No Custom Automation – There is no automation available, so you can’t alter the steps or pages the user is directed to based on their interaction with the funnel.
- Pages – The web pages cannot be fully customized. You can only change the media, text, and brand styles. You cannot move, add, or delete page elements or sections.
- Page Designs – Only one funnel gives you page design options. All the other funnels have set designs that cannot be changed.
- Emails – You can’t connect your own email marketing tool to the funnel, and Thinkific only sends one email in all three funnels. This is a recapture email in the Free Lesson Funnel.
- No Double Opt-In or Email Verifier – There is no way to verify the email address that leads enter to access your free lesson or downloads. They can access your offer as soon as they enter the information into your lead capture page. This means you could end up with lots of invalid lead data.
Which Funnels Can You Create on Thinkific?
Thinkific has three pre-built templates.
You can only use the templates and cannot create your own custom funnel.
The three templates are the following:
- Free Lesson Funnel
- Free Download Funnel
- Sales Page Funnel
Examples of Thinkific Funnels
The funnels all have one purpose each and can only be used for this.
We’ll look at all three funnel types and what you can do with them.
Free Lesson Funnel
The free lesson funnel allows you to collect leads by offering a free lesson from one of your existing courses. Users enter their email address and name to receive the free lesson.
Offering a free lesson helps you find leads who are interested in your topic and products.
The free lesson gives them an insight into your teaching style and course, which can help push them to purchase your full course.
Once the lead has completed the free lesson, the funnel sends them several purchase prompts to help generate sales.
Free Download Funnel
This funnel allows you to collect leads by offering a free downloadable file. Users enter their email address and name and are redirected to a page where they can download the file.
This funnel helps find leads that are interested in the type of product you sell. You can build a relationship with the leads and send relevant product offers to generate sales.
On the page with the downloadable file, you also have the option to add an upsell offer with a discount to entice leads to checkout.
Sales Page Funnel
Although Thinkific has this as a funnel, in our opinion, it isn’t really a funnel. It’s essentially a sales page that leads to a checkout.
The sales page gives you more space than Thinkific’s product pages. You can use this to showcase your product and help potential customers fully understand why they should buy from you.
How to Create a Thinkific Free Lesson Funnel
- From your Thinkific dashboard, click “Market and Sell.”
- Select “Funnels.”
- Click “+ Create Funnel.”
- Choose “Free Lesson Funnel.”

This could include their demographics, lifestyle, interests, goals, problems they have, services you can offer, what motivates them, and more.
We recommend utilizing the full 500-character word count, as the more information you provide, the more personalized your AI-generated landing page will be.
- Describe the problem your course is solving and click “Next.”
For example, let’s say you’re selling a Time Management and Organization course. You might write things like “always running out of time,” “disorganized,” “stressed,” “overwhelmed,” etc.

How to Customize Your Thinkific Funnel
The pages and the offers in the funnel can be customized.
However, you cannot customize the order of the funnel steps or remove or add funnel steps.
The funnel template you choose will determine the pages included. We’ll look at each funnel template and which aspects you can edit.
Free Lesson Funnel Template Steps and Pages
The free lesson funnel consists of the following steps:
1. Lead Capture Page
This is the first step in the funnel. It is the page where users need to enter their email address and name to access the free lesson and start your funnel.
In the funnel flow editor, you will be able to see the page name and the offer provided in the funnel.
To view and customize the lead capture page, click on the three dots underneath the name. This will open the page editor.
- Simple and clear headlines that correspond with your call to action (CTA).
- Show off your free lesson’s benefits.
- Keep the design in line with your website and brand.
- Add an engaging video or photo that showcases your lesson.
Free Lesson Funnel Lead Capture Page Design
Thinkific doesn’t allow you to fully customize the landing page, as you cannot move, delete, or add elements to the pages. Instead, you can select one of three designs.
The three designs can be accessed by clicking on the design button in the top left-hand corner.
You can click on each design to preview it.
You can see how the design looks on mobile by selecting the mobile icon in the top left-hand corner.
Each design consists of the same seven elements. We’ve numbered these in the image to show you where they are. They include the following:
- 1 – Title
- 2 – Subtitle
- 3 – Lead capture details
- 4 – Call-to-action button
- 5 – Outcomes headline
- 6 – Outcomes subtitles
- 7 – Media
You can edit all of the text elements except the lead capture details. The lead capture details are “Email,” “First Name,” “Last Name,” and the checkbox text, which advises that they will opt into your email marketing.
To edit the other text elements, simply click on the one you want to edit and type.
If you use the AI technology to help you build your pages, the text boxes will be populated using the information you entered during setup.
We’ve added arrows to all the text that can be clicked and edited.
To add media, click the image. This will open a media box. Here, you can select whether you want to add an image or video.
If you select “Image,” you can upload it directly to Thinkific.
If you want to add a video here, you will need to host the video on YouTube or another hosting site.
To add the video, copy the URL, select Video, paste the URL into the box, and upload a video cover image.
For both images and video, you can add ALT text. Once you’re happy with your media, you can click “Apply.”
Free Lesson Funnel Lead Capture Page Brand Styles
You can edit the following brand styles of your lead capture page:
- Fonts
- Colors
- Buttons
- Surfaces
- Inputs
To do this, click the arrow on the right-hand side of the page.
This will open the “Brand Styles” menu.
You can click each style and a dropdown menu will appear.
Edit these to suit your brand and click “Save.”
Once you’re happy with the design you’ve chosen, edited the text and media, and chosen your brand style, click “Save Draft” in the top right-hand corner.
To return to the funnel flow editor, click the “X” button in the top left-hand corner.
2. Free Lesson
The next step in the funnel is Free Lesson. This is where you select the free lesson that is provided in exchange for the lead’s details.
In the funnel flow editor, you will be able to see the step name and the course provided in the funnel.
To select the lesson, click on the three dots and click “Edit.”
This will open the course you selected to offer a free lesson from.
To choose a lesson, click on the lesson you want to offer for free.
In this example, we’ll choose the “SupplyGem Lesson.”
Scroll down to “Lesson Settings,” tick the box “Make this a Free Preview Lesson,” and click “Save.”
You can then close the course editor and return to the funnel to complete the next steps.
3. Purchase Prompt
The next step in the funnel is Purchase Prompt. This step is presented once the lead has viewed your free lesson. It is a pop-up that prompts the lead to purchase the full course.
In the funnel flow editor, you will be able to see the step name and the course provided in the funnel.
To edit the text in the purchase prompt, click the three buttons and click “Edit.”
There are three text boxes to edit. These are the header, body, and call-to-action button.
Once you’re happy with the edits to the purchase prompt, click “Save Changes” and the “X” button in the top right-hand corner.
You will then be returned to the funnel flow editor.
4. Recapture One-Time Offer Purchase Prompt
The next step in the funnel is the Recapture One-Time Offer Purchase Prompt. This step is presented if the lead skips the previous purchase prompt. It offers the lead a discount on the offer to help you win the sale.
In the funnel flow editor, you will be able to see the step name and the course provided in the funnel. It will also show whether you have chosen for the discount to be available outside of the funnel.
To edit the text and settings of the recapture one-time offer purchase prompt, click the three dots and click “Edit.”
There are three text boxes to edit. These are the title, body, and the call-to-action button.
Underneath the text boxes, you can also choose whether or not the recapture one-time offer purchase prompt is presented through the product page.
This means that when someone visits your product page, rather than the lead capture funnel, and views your free lesson, they will also be presented with the discount offer.
If you untick the box, the offer will only be available to users who access the free lesson through your funnel.
5. Drop-Off Recapture Email
The next step in the funnel is the Drop-Off Recapture Email. This step is presented if the lead hasn’t purchased the offer within an hour of seeing the purchase prompt.
In the funnel flow editor, you can see the step name and the course provided in the funnel.
You cannot customize the email, its contents, or when it’s sent.
But, if you want to see a preview of the email, you can do so by clicking the three dots and clicking “Edit.”
6. Checkout
If the customer chooses to purchase your course by clicking on the call to action through any of the offers, they will be presented with the checkout step.
The offers which direct the user to the checkout are the following:
- Purchase Prompt
- Recapture One-Time Offer Purchase Prompt
- Drop-Off Recapture Email
The checkout is Thinkific’s Built-In Checkout. The checkout page cannot be customized and is the same one used for all purchases on Thinkific.
7. Thank You Page
If the customer completes the checkout, they will be directed to the Thank You page.
You cannot create a custom Thank You page specific to the funnel.
The funnel Thank You page is the same one as your site’s Thank You page.
By clicking “Edit,” you will be redirected to the Thank You page in your site builder.
Any changes you make will be shown for all the products you sell.
Free Download Funnel Template Steps and Pages

The Lead Capture page is the first page of the funnel. It is the page where users enter their email address and name in order to receive your free download.
In the funnel flow editor, you will see the step name, your download title, and the download type.
To edit the lead capture page, click the three dots and click “Edit.” This will open the page editor.

- 5 – Highlights 1-3

To edit the text elements, simply click on the one you want to edit and type.
If you use the AI technology to help you build your pages, the text boxes will be pre-filled using the information you entered during setup.

In the funnel flow editor, you will be able to see the page name and the one-time offer provided in the funnel.
To edit the page, you can click on the three dots and click Edit.

1 – Download Section
The first section of the page is the download.
This is where the customer clicks the button to access your free download.
You cannot change the layout or design of the section. But you can change the title and text next to the button.
To edit the text elements, simply click on the one you want to edit and type.
We’ve added arrows to the text that can be clicked and edited.

3. Checkout
The checkout step is only added to the funnel if you have added a one-time offer.

Like in the Free Lesson Funnel, the checkout is Thinkific’s Built-In Checkout. It cannot be customized and is the same one used for all purchases on Thinkific.

The thank you page step is only added to the funnel if you have added a one-time offer to the funnel.

By clicking “Edit,” you will be redirected to the Thank You page in your site builder. Any changes you make will be shown for all the products you sell.
Sales Page Template Steps and Pages
1. Sales Page
The sales page is the largest page that Thinkific offers. It is like a long-form product page.
There is plenty of space to showcase your course content and the benefits of buying.
This gives potential customers all the course information in one place, which can help to maximize sales.
In the funnel flow editor, you will be able to see the page name and the course for sale in the funnel.
To edit the sales page, click the three dots and click “Edit.” This will open the page editor.
There is only one design available for the sales page, and you cannot alter the layout. The sections and elements within the sales page are fixed.
However, you can change the brand style, edit the text, and add an image.
The sales page is split into five sections. These are the following:
- 1 – Offer (or Media section)
- 2 – Highlights
- 3 – About
- 4 – Curriculum
- 5 – Call to Action (CTA)
We’ve zoomed out on the full sales page so you can see a complete overview. We’ve labeled each section.
The main element you can customize is the text in each section. For all the text elements, simply click on the one you want to edit and type.
If you use the AI technology to help you build your sales page, the text boxes will be populated using the information you entered during setup.
We will highlight the text elements for each section below.
1. Sales Page Offer (or Media) Section Customization
The first area of the page is the offer. This is where potential customers can see an overview of the course and either purchase or preview it.
The section is made up of several elements. These are the following:
- 1 – Title
- 2 – Enroll Now Call to Action (CTA) Button
- 3 – Free Preview Call to Action (CTA) Button
- 4 – Image or Video
You can edit the title and CTA buttons as described above, but the price and course curriculum overview cannot be changed or customized.
To add media, click on the image. This will open a media box. Here, you can select whether you want to add an image or video.
If you select “Image,” you can upload it directly to Thinkific.
If you want to add a video here, you will need to host the video on YouTube or another hosting site. To add the video, copy the URL, select “Video,” paste the URL into the box, and upload a video cover image.
For both images and video, you can add ALT text. Once you’re happy with your media, you can click “Apply.”
2. Sales Page Highlights Section Customization
The highlights section has three bullet points. These are where you can describe the outcome the buyer will receive if they purchase your course.
The highlights should be short, clear, and concise.
We recommend adding the three most important aspects of your course here as it’s the first thing the potential customers will read about your course. This is your chance to convince them that they need to buy.
The three highlights can be edited as described above.
3. Sales Page About Section Customization
The “About” section gives you space to go into more detail.
You might want to expand on your highlighted points, describe your brand origin, or talk about the teacher of the course.
If a potential customer is drawn in by your highlighted bullet points, they will likely read this section to understand you and your course more.
We recommend using this section to connect with the buyer and tell them why your course will work for them.
The about section consists of two parts: the title and the body. You can edit both of these as described above.
4. Sales Page Curriculum Section Customization
The next section is the curriculum or syllabus. This section shows potential buyers all of your course modules and lessons. It gives them a complete overview, which can help them decide if it’s the right course for them.
You cannot edit the curriculum as the information is pulled directly from your course.
If you have enabled a free preview for one of your lessons, students will be able to see and access it here.
Enabling students to preview your lesson will give them a real insight into your course and can help increase your conversion rate.
The only text you can edit in this section is the title. This is done in the same way as described above.
5. Sales Page Call-to-Action Section Customization
The last section of the page is your call to action.
By the time visitors have reached this section, they will have read the rest of your sales page and learned all about your course. They might have also previewed a lesson (if you’ve allowed them to do so).
The call to action is the last chance for you to convert your visitors into customers.
This section includes a title, subtitle, price, and button.
Thinkific allows you to edit the title, subtitle, and call-to-action button text. You can do so as described above.
We recommend keeping the title and subtitle short, simple, and direct. You can use persuasive language and highlight your main selling point to help convince visitors to purchase your course.
Sales Page Brand Styles
You can edit the following brand styles on your sales page:
- Fonts
- Colors
- Buttons
- Surfaces
- Inputs
To do this, click on the arrow on the right-hand side of the page.
This will open the “Brand Styles” menu.
You can click on each style, and a dropdown menu will appear. You can edit these to suit your brand and click “Save.”
You can see how the design looks on mobile by selecting the mobile icon in the top left-hand corner.
Once you’ve updated the text in all of the sections, added your media, and chosen your brand style, click “Save Draft” in the top right-hand corner.
To return to the funnel flow editor, click the “X” button in the top left-hand corner.
2. Checkout
If the customer enrolls in your course through the sales page, they will be redirected to your checkout.
Like the other two funnels, the checkout is Thinkific’s Built-In Checkout. You can’t make any changes, and it is the same one used for all purchases on Thinkific.
3. Thank You Page
If the customer completes the checkout, they will be directed to the Thank You page.
Like the other two funnels, the Thank You page cannot be customized and is the same as your site’s Thank You page.
By clicking “Edit,” you will be redirected to the Thank You page in your site builder. Any changes you make will be shown for all the products you sell.
How to Find and Adjust the Settings of Your Thinkific Funnel
The settings for all of the funnels are similar, and you navigate them in the same way.
We will look at the funnel dashboard, how to access the settings, and how to edit the funnel settings.
Thinkific Funnel Dashboard
Your funnel dashboard will show all of the funnels you’ve created in a list.
You can access and edit each funnel from here and create a new funnel.
To create a new funnel, click “+ Create Funnel” in the top-right-hand corner.
If you’ve built funnels, you will see a list of them all here. You can see the following information about each funnel:
- Date funnel created
- Status of the funnel
- Type of funnel – This will either be a Sale Page, Free Download, or Free Lesson.
- Slug – This is the funnel’s URL.
- Product – This is the product that is for sale in the funnel.
- Last updated
- Date published
On the far right-hand side, next to the funnel, there are three dots. When you click the dots, there are four options in a dropdown list. These are the following:
- Edit
- Copy URL
- Publish
- Delete
If your funnel is published, there will also be the options to “Unpublish” and “Copy URL.”
This is a quick way to perform actions on your funnel. However, you can also perform these actions in the funnel flow editor.
To access the funnel flow editor, either click “Edit” from the dropdown list or click on the row of the funnel you want to open.
Thinkific Funnel Flow Editor
The funnel flow editor is where you can edit all aspects of your funnel.
At the top of the page, you’ll see the type of funnel you have opened.
Underneath this, you’ll see two tabs.
The first tab is Flow. The steps in the flow will depend on the funnel you’ve selected. We won’t cover this here, as we’ve already gone into depth in the “How to Customize You Thinkific Funnel” section above.
The second step is Settings.
The settings that are displayed here will depend on the type of funnel you have.
Free Lesson Funnel Settings
- Share Funnel Link – This is the link to the first step of the funnel.
- Main Offer – This is the course you are offering the free lesson from.
- Main Offer Discount – This is the discount percentage offered if the lead ignores the first purchase prompt.
- Delete – You can delete your funnel from here. Once it has been deleted, you cannot recover it.
Free Download Funnel Settings
- Share Link – Like the free lesson funnel, this is the link to the first step of the funnel.
- Leads – Export your lead’s information. This is the information they entered to download your resource.
- Lead Magnet Type – This is the type of resource you’re offering. You can see the current resource type and change it by choosing from the dropdown menu.
- Lead Magnet File – This is the file you’re offering for free. You can see the file you added during setup and change it here.
- Delete – You can delete your funnel from here. Once it has been deleted, you cannot recover it.
If you have added an upsell offer to your free download funnel, you will also have an additional setting:
- One-Time Offer Upsell – This is the offer that will appear on your free download page. You can select and change the upsell product, as well as adjust the discount percentage.
Sales Page Funnel Settings
- Share Link – Like the other funnels, this is where you’ll find the link to your funnel.
- Course – This is the course that you are selling in the funnel. You can use the dropdown menu to select or change the course.
- Delete – You can delete your funnel from here. Once it has been deleted, you cannot recover it.
How to Preview, Publish, and Share Your Thinkific Funnel
After you’ve built your funnel, you will need to publish and share it to start generating leads.
How to Publish Your Thinkific Funnel
Thinkific makes it easy to publish your funnels once you’ve finished customizing them.
You can do this in two ways.
Publish from the Funnel Dashboard
- Click on the three dots next to the funnel you want to publish.
- Click “Publish.”
Publish from the Funnel Editor
- Toggle the button on the right-hand side that says “Publish Funnel.”
After you’ve published your funnel either through the funnel dashboard or funnel editor, a pop-up screen will appear. You need to confirm you’re ready to publish your funnel by clicking “Publish Funnel.”
Once you’ve clicked “Publish Funnel,” you will receive a message that makes it easy to share and preview your funnel.
How to Preview and Share Your Funnel
As we just saw, after you’ve published your funnel, you’ll receive a pop-up window.
The pop-up window has a button that says “Preview Funnel.”
By clicking here, you will open the first page of the funnel.
You can also preview your funnel from the funnel dashboard by clicking the three dots on the line of the published funnel you want to preview.
You can also preview the funnel by copying the URL and pasting it into a new window.
The URL can be found in the pop-up window when you first publish the funnel, in the funnel dashboard under the three dots, and in the funnel editor settings.
To share your funnel, you can copy the URL and distribute it or use the “Share on Social Media” buttons.
To test your funnel, you can complete the lead capture page. You will then be entered into the funnel and experience your funnel as a lead will.
How to Find the Leads from Your Funnel
After you’ve published your funnel, you will start collecting leads. You can find the leads from each funnel and export them.
Finding your leads allows you to nurture them and build a relationship to generate sales.
You can do this in several ways, such as sending them relevant content, contacting them to see how they’re getting on with either their free download or free lesson, and sending them offers relevant to the funnel or product they engaged with or opted-in from.
Find and Export Leads from Funnel Settings
- Open the funnel you want to export the leads from.
- Click “Settings.”
- Scroll down to “Leads.”
- Click “Export Leads.”
Thinkific will email you a CSV file that includes all of your leads. You can download the file from the email.
Find and Export Leads from Student Support
- Click “Student Support.”
- Select “Users.”
- Click “Filters.”
- Choose “External Sources,” then “Is,” and then type in your funnel name.
E.g., External Sources – Is – Free Lesson Funnel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thinkific Have Sales Funnels?
Yes. Thinkific offers three types of sales funnels. Two of the funnels are lead capture funnels, which also allow you to present an offer, and the third is a sales page.
Do I Need to Use Sales Funnels on Thinkific?
No, you don’t need to. However, if you have a Thinkific account, it can be a great way to increase your reach, capture new leads, and generate sales. It’s also free and super easy, so we recommend using them.
Can I Recapture Leads from My Thinkific Funnels?
Yes, in the Free Lesson funnel, the user will be presented with a full-price offer. If they decline this, they will be presented with a discount offer and then a recapture email if they haven’t checked out. You can also export your leads and create email campaigns outside of Thinkific to recapture leads.
Do Thinkific Funnels Replace Funnel Building Tools?
It depends. If you only want basic funnels, they might be enough, but they can’t compete with most funnel-building tools.
